Police Investigate Early Morning Homicide

Around 1:57 this morning, Jackson Police received a call of a shooting at Lane Crest Apartments located at 905 Lane Avenue, apartment 3. Xavier McKinney- Hopkins, age 22, of Jackson, was found with multiple gunshot wounds. Mr. McKinney-Hopkins did not live at this address. It appears that there was an exchange of gunfire. He was transported to the Jackson Madison County General Hospital by E.M.S. where he underwent emergency surgery. He succumbed to his injuries and was officially pronounced dead at 7:35 this morning. James Holden, age 30, of Jackson, was dropped off at Regional Hospital emergency room by an unidentified person around 2:53 this morning. He has been admitted for multiple gunshot wounds. His injuries do not appear to be life threatening. Police are investigating to determine if the two shootings are related. Mr. McKinney-Hopkins was charged with the January 15, 2008, homicide of Phillip Williamson, which occurred at the Royal Street Grocery at 757 N. Royal. That case was presented directly to the grand jury, and he was indicted. He was in custody at the Madison County Jail from May 2008 to December 2008 under bond for the murder of Mr. Williamson and violation of community corrections. The District Attorney's Office filed a motion of Nolle Prosequi in December 2008 for the murder of Mr. Williamson after an eyewitness from Memphis was unable to be located for trial.
