Sept. 12, 2012 - Brownsville TN -- The (Brownsville) city board convened in a short session late yesterday.
Most of the meeting was routine with a number of permits issued and informational updates — but Alderman John Simmons talked about a matter that has troubled many since Monday night (...) Facebook Post.
(Alderman) Simmons voiced concern about a Facebook post regarding an incident which allegedly occurred at a Brownsville convenience store involving a store worker and a soldier.
The Facebook post from the angry soldier has spread far and wide and the subject of his unhappiness, a clerk at Brownsville Express, Brownsville Radio learned yesterday, told local authorities he plans to apologize.
Tommy Williams, who serves in the Army National Guard, wrote a Facebook post to “All Brownsville Residents” Monday night. Williams said,
“Last night I went to Brownsville Express in uniform and the young guy behind the counter told me to take that (expletive) off.” Williams said the youth was talking about his uniform.
Brownsville Express is located on Anderson next to the Post Office.
Williams’ post has been passed around on Facebook extensively drawing hundreds of “likes” and comments.
Brownsville Police Chief Chris Lea told Brownsville Radio yesterday that the police department hasn’t been directly involved since no crimes have been committed. Lea said officers are aware of the incident and have discussed it with operators of the store “Our job is to protect people and we’re watching the store closely,” Lea said Tuesday.
Last night, at the city board meeting, Mayor Matherne, responding to Alderman Simmons’ comments, said Brownsville officials had received numerous calls regarding the matter, had held situational meetings with individuals involved in the incident, and were working to resolve the situation.
Williams told Brownsville Radio he’d be happy with an apology. Williams said the young clerk made the comment as he was leaving the store after making a purchase there.
