One Man Arrested for Making False Statements to Officers
Jackson police were called about shots fired in the area of 33 Carver Avenue at 3:43 p.m. Saturday. Shortly afterward a 17-year-old male youth was transported by ambulance to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital with a gunshot wound to the stomach. He was taken to emergency surgery and last listed in serious condition.
About 10 minutes after the first gunshot victim arrived, a second gunshot victim, Gary Morris, arrived by personal vehicle at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. He had a gunshot wound to the right thigh. He initially told police that he was shot by someone while walking in the area of Dupree and Whitehall Streets.
Investigators were able to determine that Morris, 22, accidentally shot himself in the leg while inside an SUV. He was treated at the hospital and released to police custody. Police intend to charge Morris for making false statements. The investigation continues as police attempt to determine whether the shootings are related.
Morris is scheduled to be arraigned at 8 a.m. Monday in Jackson City Court on a charge of filing a false police report.
