Man Charged with the City's First Homicide of 2012; Jeremy Jones Indicted on Charges of Second Degree Murder for Feb. Shooting on the Campus of Lane College; Jones is being Held on Several Crimes that Occurred in August
Jackson police completed the investigation in the Feb. 1st shooting on the Lane College Campus that left Justin Clark, 21, dead. On Monday, investigators presented the case to the Madison County grand jury. Indictments were returned charging Jeremy Jones with second degree murder and employing a firearm during a dangerous felony. Jones, 20, will be formally arraigned in Madison County Circuit Court, Division III on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
Police were called about the shooting around 6:10 p.m. Officers and EMS responded to the campus at 545 Lane Ave. Clark had been shot in the head. He was rushed by ambulance to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 8:55 a.m. the following day.
The investigation revealed that Clark and Jones were friends and had gone to the campus together. Neither man was a Lane student. Clark was involved in a fist fight with a Lane student near the gymnasium. During the fight, shots were fired by two people. Jones was identified as one of the shooters. After the fired shots, Clark was the only person who had been shot. Police collected multiple shell casings from the scene. The casings and bullets that struck Clark were sent to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation crime lab for comparison. Ballistic results confirmed that Clark was fatally shot by a gun that Jones was shooting.
Jones is currently in custody at the Madison County jail on multiple unrelated charges.
On Aug. 11, Jones handed Devin Long a gun, and Long shot at a car occupied by four people near 216 Roosevelt Parkway. Police issued an arrest warrant for Jones for four counts of aggravated assault. On Aug. 14 he was apprehended after being chased by police in Lincoln Courts. He was additionally charged with evading arrest. Jones posted a $10,000 bond and was released from jail two days later.
On August 22 Jones shot at a man at the Villages Apartments, at 550 Old Hickory Blvd. The man was not struck but a bullet traveled across Old Hickory and penetrated the window at Dawn's Fabrics at 621 Old Hickory Blvd. An employee was nearly struck. Jones had left the scene when police arrived. The man who Jones shot at was uncooperative with officers.
Around 4 a.m. on August 26, Jones was stopped by police on the parking lot of IHOP at 9 Stonebridge Blvd., after an officer noticed him walking with a limp and suspiciously holding his hip area. The officer found a pistol inside Jones' beltline. He was charged with possession of a firearm. He was additionally charged with reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon and vandalism for the August 22 shooting.
Bond was set at $75,000 for the gun charge, and $150,000 for the reckless endangerment and vandalism.
The previous $10,000 bond was revoked due to the August 26 arrest.
The August cases are scheduled to go before the December grand jury.
