Police Arrest Man in Mid-Day Burglary and Armed Robbery; Police Dog Recovered the Victim's Wallet
Jackson police arrested a man responsible for a mid-day break in and armed robbery, and a police dog recovered the man's stolen wallet.
Dayonte Murphy, of Jackson, is scheduled to be arraigned at 8 a.m. Friday in Jackson City Court on charges of burglary and aggravated robbery.
Police were called at 11:53 a.m. Thursday to the Sylvan Learning Center at 127 Devonshire Square. The investigation has shown that Murphy, 18, was wearing a purple ski mask when he entered the learning center through an employee side door. Murphy was armed when he approached an employee and robbed him of his wallet and cell phone.
Moments after the robbery, an officer with the K-9 Unit assisted in detaining Murphy in the area of Carriage House Drive and Wallace Road. Officers saw a purple ski mask partially hanging out of Murphy's pocket. The police dog back tracked Murphy's scent and led officers to the rear of a vacant business in the 100 block of Carriage House Drive. Officers discovered a BB gun on the ground near the steps.
The dog also alerted on the business' ventilation door. Officers noticed that the door had been pried open. The K-9 handler directed the dog to retrieve evidence. The dog entered the crawl space and recovered the victim's wallet.
