TRAFFIC STOP LEADS INVESTIGATORS TO METH LAB IN JACKSON

On November 19, 2009 a Metro Narcotics Investigator stopped a 2008 black Jeep Cherokee on Hollywood Drive near I-40 for a traffic violation.  The driver of the vehicle was identified as Cory Wayne Clifft, age 31 of 20 Pin Oak Cove in Jackson and the passenger was Bobby Eugene Sheffield, age 32 of 6 Greenbriar Cove in Jackson.  During the traffic stop the Narcotics Investigator observed a strong chemical odor emitting from inside the vehicle.  Clifft admitted to the investigator that there was a meth lab in the vehicle and gave officers consent to search the vehicle.  Officers found an electric pill grinder with pseudoephedrine residue inside, lithium batteries, fertilizer pellets, Coleman Camp Fuel, lye, plastic tubing, plastic bottles, and unknown liquids inside the vehicle which led officers to arresting and charging Clifft and Sheffield.  Officers also found methamphetamine in Mr. Clifft’s vehicle. Metro Narcotics officers removed the hazardous chemicals and apparatus and contacted the DEA to have a hazardous materials contractor to respond and take away the items for destruction.  Officers remained on the scene until the cleanup process had been completed. Cory Wayne Clifft, age 31 of 20 Pin Oak Cove is being held at the Madison County Jail for the investigation of Manufacturing Methamphetamine, Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute and Felony Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  Clifft will be arraigned in Madison County General Sessions Court. Bobby Eugene Sheffield, age 32 of 6 Greenbriar Cove is also being held at the Madison County Jail for the investigation of Manufacturing Methamphetamine, Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute and Felony Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  Sheffield will be arraigned in Madison County General Sessions Court.
