Jackson Police Officer Involved Shooting on Littleberry Cove

Officer Involved Shooting on Littleberry Cove Police were called to investigate a threatening phone call that was made to what turned out to be a wrong number. The female caller made threats to kill a local member of the judiciary and their family. Investigators traced the call to a cellular phone belonging to Steva Williams age 40 who resides in an apartment in the 900 block Old Hickory Blvd. The Officers who went to Ms. Williams apartment report they found Ms. Williams to be highly agitated. Reportedly, she responded to Investigators but her responses were disconnected to the questions asked and at times she was almost incoherent. Based on the nature of the threats and the Officers observations it was apparent that Ms. Williams was a potential threat to herself and others and needed to be transported to the hospital for evaluation and any appropriate treatment. When Officers explained to Ms. Williams what they were about to do, she ran from the room and into the kitchen where she armed herself with a large knife. Before Officers could detain and disarm her she fled out the back door. Officers called for assistance and reported the now armed and apparently unbalanced Williams running into a residential area behind the apartments. Officer located and confronted Ms. Williams on Littleberry Cove. Based on the preliminary investigation and witness interviews, when Officers attempted to stop Ms. Williams she went toward one of the Officers with the knife even though he was ordering her to stop. He struck her with his baton but she didn’t stop. The Officer shot her at close range as she continued to come on him. Ms. Williams was transported by ambulance and was conscious when they left the scene. At this writing, 6:00 p.m. Sunday, Ms. Williams is undergoing emergency surgery. She is under guard charged with aggravated assault on an Officer. She may face additional charges connected with the threats The Officer who shot Ms. Williams is not injured. He is on paid administrative leave, which is normal procedure when an Officer is involved in a shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
