Generals top Braves to even series Brandon Maurer becomes first Generals to 9 wins

JACKSON, TENN. (AUGUST 16, 2012) - Brandon Maurer became the Generals first nine-game winner as the Generals topped Mississippi 5-2 on Thursday at Pringles Park. The Generals also become the first team in the Southern League to 70 wins. Jackson is 70-53, 28-25 on the season and trail Chattanooga by three games in the second half.

The Generals scored two runs in the third taking advantage of an RBI single from Nate Tenbrink and RBI groundout from Stefen Romero taking a 2-0 lead.

Jackson added to their lead in the fifth inning with a two-run single by Joe Dunigan and an RBI double by Mike Zunino. It was Zunino's first Double-A RBI.

The Braves would score two runs in the eighth against Jackson reliever Mauricio Robles, but stranded the bases loaded.

Jackson starter Brandon Maurer (9-2) tossed 6.0 shutout innings, allowing just 3 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 2. Yoervis Medina struck out 2 and walked 2 over the final 1.2 innings to earn his 5th save. Braves starter J.R. Graham (1-1) took the loss.

Mike Zunino reached base four times Thursday going 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and walk. Nate Tenbrink was 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Stefen Romero was 2-for-4 with an RBI as well.

The Generals continue their six-game series in five days Friday with game five of the set. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. LHP Steve Garrison (5-3, 3.94) will get the start for Jackson and be opposed by RHP Gary Moran (5-10, 3.05) for Mississippi. Friday there is a pregame team autograph session at 6:00 p.m. and its Kids Eat Free Friday with purchase of a regularly priced ticket.
