Beginning to look like a Detroit-St. Louis World Series...Ducks roll to 7-0

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have swept the New York Yankees, winning the finale of the AL Championship Series 8-1. Jhonny (JAHN'-nee) Peralta hit two of the Tigers' four home runs and Max Scherzer and three relievers combined on a two-hitter.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals moved to within one victory away from returning to the World Series and getting a shot at winning back-to-back Series titles. Adam Wainwright shut down San Francisco and the Cardinals beat the Giants 8-3 to take a 3-1 lead in the NL Championship Series with Game 5 Friday night at Busch Stadium.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Alex Smith threw a 12-yard TD pass to Delanie Walker late in the third quarter and San Francisco held off the Seattle Seahawks 13-6 on Thursday night as the 49ers took over sole possession of first place in the NFC West. Frank Gore ran for 116 yards and the 5-2 Niners.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — In college football, second-ranked Oregon remained undefeated by routing Arizona State 43-21. Kenjon Barner ran for 143 yards and three TDs and quarterback Marcus Mariota added 135 yards rushing, and an 86-yard touchdown.

NEW YORK (AP) — The possibility of playing a full 82-game NHL season is quickly shrinking in the wake of another breakdown in labor talks. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman received three counterproposals from the players' association on Thursday and left the negotiating table "thoroughly disappointed."
