PHILADELPHIA (AP) - After yesterday's travel day, the National
League championship series resumes tonight with the San Francisco
Giants needing one victory to dethrone the Philadelphia Phillies as
National League champions. The Giants own a 3-2 series lead and
will send Jonathan Sanchez to the mound in Philly to face Roy
Oswalt (OHZ'-wahlt), who is 10-and-0 lifetime at Citizens Bank
Park.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The American League champion Texas
Rangers are basking in the glow of their first AL pennant in their
50-year franchise history. The Rangers captured the AL flag with a
6-1 victory over the defending World Series champion Yankees, and
now are off until the World Series starts next Wednesday night in
the park of the NL champion, either San Francisco or Philadelphia.
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - With Oregon having won handily on Thursday
night against UCLA and second-ranked Boise State on a bye weekend,
the third-ranked Oklahoma Sooners are the highest-ranked team in
the AP rankings in action today. The Sooners travel to play at
18th-ranked Missouri in a matchup of 6-0 teams.
NEW YORK (AP) - The 30-team NBA could shrink by the time the
league finishes its next collective bargaining agreement with its
players. The league wants salary costs slashed by a-third and
commissioner David Stern acknowledged yesterday that contraction of
some teams "will be on the table" in the new collective
bargaining agreement.
ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - After coming out of retirement,
American gymnast Alicia Sacramone (sak-rah-MOH'-nee) has won the
gold medal in the vault at the world championships in the
Netherlands. She edged all-around champion Aliya Mustafina, the
most successful gymnast at the championships so far. The Russian
now has a silver and two golds with three events to go.
