Suspect Charged in
Purse Snatching Robberies Update
(July 23, 2007):
Danny Springfield remained in the Madison County jail on Monday.
Springfield, 39, is accused of stealing purses from four women Friday.
In two of the cases, police said he robbed the women by leaning out of
his vehicle's window and grabbing their purses while he was driving.
According to police one charge stems from the robbery of a 55-year-old
Jackson woman who was leaving Highland Park Grocery about 2 p.m. Friday.
The 2nd charge is connected to the robbery of a 56-year-old Jackson
woman in the parking lot of Oak Hill Shopping Center on Old Hickory
Boulevard. Police said the woman's arm was fractured.
Both women were pulled to the ground during the
robberies, which prompted the judge to set Springfield's bond at
$50,000.
Danny Wayne Springfield, age 39 of Brenda Lane, was arrested about 8:00
p.m. at 336 South Highland (Highland and Church) after being spotted by
Police. Springfield has been identified and has admitted to four purse
snatching / robbery incidents Friday afternoon / evening.
In the first incident, a 79 year old Jackson woman was in the checkout
line at Marketplace at 1725 S. Highland about 2:00 p.m. Friday when
Springfield, forcibly took her purse from her. He was observed getting
into a bluish green Pontiac and fleeing the scene.
Next, about 5:10 p.m., a 55 year old Jackson woman was leaving Highland
Park Grocery at 1403 N. Highland when Springfield pulled out of a nearby
parking space, reached out of his vehicle, grabbed her purse as he went
by and pulled her to the ground dragging her a short distance. He was
driving the same vehicle. She was treated at a local hospital for her
injuries.
About thirty minutes later, he again attempted to rob a 56 year old
Jackson Woman on the parking lot of Oak Hill Shopping Center at 103 Old
Hickory. Again he drove by and attempted to snatch her purse from his
moving vehicle pulling her to the ground. Although he was unsuccessful
in getting the purse, he did fracture the ladies arm. She also was
transported and treated at a local hospital.
Finally, about 7:55 p.m., he struck again near the front entrance of
Jackson General when he drove by his 64 year old victim, reached out,
snatched her purse and drove away. She was not injured.
He was located moments later and arrested. He attributed his crime spree
to narcotics. The three stolen purses were recovered. Springfield also
had an active capias in City Court for failure to appear on a simple
domestic assault case.
Springfield is being held at the Madison County Jail without bond
pending formal arraignment in City Court Monday Morning at 8:00.
